Instructions for the Motivational Gifts Assessment

The intention of this assessment is to help you understand the motivational gifts God the Father has given you. You’ll likely be strong in two, maybe three, and weaker in the others. This is critically important to understand: none of these gifts are “wrong” or “right” in comparison to other gifts! No gift is “better” or “worse” than any other gift! To believe such would be a fundamental misunderstanding of God’s design. A steering wheel is no “better” than a tire. A transmission is no “worse” than a battery. It takes all parts of a car to ensure a smooth and reliable ride. All the motivational gifts are endowments from our Heavenly Father and are precious pieces of His divine character hardwired into each of us. Every gift is indispensable for His plans to come to pass in the earth.

Avoid answering questions based on what a person ought to do or what you think is the right thing for a person to do. Don’t answer these questions based on your personal aspirations or your idea of what a mature Christian ought to be. Answer these questions based on your most realistic (based in reality) and conventional (natural) state of thinking. This assessment is not meant to describe who you ought to be, but who you are.

Avoid taking too long to think about a question. Try to answer quickly and with your first, most natural response. If possible, it’s helpful to take this assessment with a mature person who knows you well and has observed you in different contexts (work, home, school, church, vacations, difficult circumstances, celebrations, etc). Parents, spouses, and/or longterm, mature friends may be of help in taking this assessment.

As you read a question, imagine yourself in the various contexts of your daily life. At home with family, at work with coworkers, bosses, costumers/clients/patients, at school with teachers and students, at church (etc), how would you respond to the question?

Read through the seventy statements and choose the answer which is most appropriate for you on a scale of 1-5: 1 meaning “Rarely True" and 5 meaning "Always True.”

After completing all seventy statements, your scores will be tabulated. The gifts we’d encourage you to pay the most attention to are your highest, your second highest, and your lowest. These represent the amazing gifts God has given you to glorify Him and bless others. Also, it shows a gift you can especially focus on receiving from others as well as learning to follow their example. We help each other express all seven of God’s gifts by giving our personal gifts as well as receiving and learning from others’ gifts.
